B2.3 WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SIZE OF A SAMPLE ON MELTING?

The photos on the right show the same sample of wax.

Measurements show that the volume of the wax in the liquid state is only slightly bigger than in the solid state.

After melting, the particles are only slightly further apart.
The changes we see are caused by the change in the movement of the particles, not by big changes in the spacing. 
The particles themselves do not change.
