The simulation shows the reaction:

Combustion only happens when the reaction mixture is at a high temperature.

When it is hot enough for wax to react with
oxygen, the wax is in the gas state. This is why the reaction is a flame.
   
When it is hot enough for carbon to react with
oxygen, the carbon is still in the solid state.
There is no flame.
