We
could show that methane, nitrogen and oxygen are different
substances by cooling them down until they changed to liquid:
each substance would do this as it cooled below its boiling
point, so we would need very low
temperatures.
We can also show that they are different substances by
testing a sample of each substance with a lighted splint:
