J1.3 TESTING FOR SOLUBILITY
LINKS
When testing a substance you should start by adding a small amount of solute to a large amount of water:

If you put a lot of alum in a small amount of water you would get a saturated solution before it had all dissolved.

You would see that there was a lot of alum that had not dissolved, but you might not notice that some of the alum had dissolved.

The question to ask is not ‘Does it dissolve?’, but ‘How much of it dissolves?’
