J2.1 SOLUBILITY AND TEMPERATURE

The table shows the solubility of some substances at two different temperatures:

  Solubility in grams
per 100ml of water
Substance 20 ° C 60 ° C
Alum 11 45
Carbon Dioxide 0.17 0.06
Salt 36 37

 

We can see that, going from 20°C to 60°C:

the solubility of alum goes up;
the solubility of carbon dioxide goes down;
the solubility of salt hardly changes.


There is no easy rule which predicts how the solubility of a particular substance will change with temperature.

Nevertheless, it is important to know that solubility does depend on temperature and that it can affect substances differently.
