In general, substances with molecular structures have low melting points.

This is because the hold between molecules is weak compared to a bond between atoms.

In general, the hold between molecules increases with the size of molecule.

 

 

For substances made of small molecules (around 5 atoms or fewer) the hold between molecules is so weak that these substances are usually in the gas state at room temperature:
