Oxygen and ozone are two different substances, but are made from the same kind of atom, while propanone, glucose and wax are made of the same three types of atom.

Different substances, with very different properties, can be made of the same atoms:

It is the pattern and type of bonding between atoms that determines the properties of a substance. The individual atoms do not have the properties.
