N1.2 WHAT IS A CRYSTAL? ( 2)
LINKS
A crystal has flat surfaces. The flat surfaces meet to give straight edges.

This is because the particles are in an ordered pattern. The particles are in rows and the rows line up to give layers.

Look at the ordered arrangements of the egg-shaped particles in the model, and try to notice where the layers are as the model rotates:

The layers can be in many directions and determine the overall shape of the crystal.

Notes: see Teachers’ Guide

This only shows the start of a crystal.
There are billions and billions of particles in the smallest crystal we can see.
