Different
particle shapes give different patterns of packing: this gives
different crystal shapes.
|
|
Of course, a broken crystal is not such a perfect
shape, but the breaks will be along layers to give
flat surfaces to the fragments. Also, depending
on the conditions in which they form, crystals
don't always grow evenly in all directions.

Why is a nice crystal a sign
of a pure sample of a
substance?
