What we have seen for lead goes for any substance. Both the
solid and liquid states can exist at the melting point. What
happens depends on whether energy is gained or lost.
For a sample of a substance at its melting point:

gained it changes from
the solid to the liquid state; |

it changes from the
liquid to the solid state; |

if energy is neither gained
nor lost, it will
stay as it is: no melting or freezing. |
