Notes on melting points and energy values
There is no clear relationship between the melting point and
the energy to change state at melting point. The
strength of hold determines the melting point, but other factors
determine the energy needed to make the change:
it is not appropriate to go into these at this stage.
Note on states at boiling point
Students should recall that they saw this during
earlier work on boiling point, on page C3.1. If you would
like to show the video again, click the ‘see video again’
button on page O2.1. Once you have seen the video, you can
return to O2.1 by using the web browser ‘Back’
button.
Notes on video of distillation
Stop the video as soon as the thermometer is mentioned and
ask students to predict what temperature it will
show before continuing.
Notes on boiling points and energy values
Again, there is no simple relationship between the
boiling point and the energy needed to change the state from
liquid to gas at boiling point.
