Ethanoic acid is a little different:
Each molecule has one hydrogen atom attached to an oxygen atom and three hydrogen atoms attached to a carbon atom.




Only the hydrogen attached to the oxygen atom is ‘replaced’
, but not the ones attached to carbon.



In all of these reactions, water molecules are needed to help to pull the hydrogen atoms away from the acid molecules.
This is why acids only react like acids when dissolved in water.
Water molecules cannot help to pull off hydrogen atoms that are bonded to carbon atoms.
