We can use the previous ideas to explain how water evaporates.

Even at room temperature, some of the water particles will be very energetic. These particles can overcome the hold of other particles and can leave on their own. However, they can only leave if they happen to be at the surface.

At the same time, air particles will be colliding with water particles at the surface. A high energy air particle is able to knock medium and low energy water particles away from the others.
