Notes on the ‘three crowns’ animation
The key point for students to grasp is that the pure substance
used for the gold crowns has a unique density, so any
other density means it is not pure gold.
The density of the fake crown is noticeably less than that
of gold and is much closer to that of lead. This is the
nearest density value to the measured value, and students
should be able to suggest that lead was used instead of
gold. (Assume that enough gold was used to make sure that
the surface looked the right colour!)
