Notes on the structures
Students should notice the following points:-
|
Some of the particles
are made of just one type of atom and some are made
of two or more types of atom.
|

Propanone, glucose
and wax are made of the same three types of atoms. |
Oxygen and ozone are both made of the same one type of atom.
For historical reasons, atoms were named after the elements
as they were discovered. Since oxygen was discovered before
ozone, the type of atom making these two substances is called
an oxygen atom, although they are very different: for example,
they have different melting points, and breathing ozone would
kill you. Having the same name for both the atom and the substance,
which are very different things, can be confusing. (There
