‘Water in the gas state: explaining in terms of particles’

Students may find it difficult to accept that there is not ‘something’ between the particles, so it is important to emphasise that the particles are the substance, and that there cannot be anything else in there with them.

It is also important to emphasise that the particles have more energy in the gas state but have not changed in any other way. The increase in volume is because the particles are moving around more, with lots of empty space between them, but the particles themselves do not get bigger.
