Notes on substances and melting point

‘A
substance’
This summarises the unique link between a substance
and its melting point. The fact that the sample size does
not
affect melting point is covered in ‘Samples’,
while the link between melting point and state at room temperature
is
made in ‘State and melting point’.
‘State and melting point’
You may like to use this as an opportunity for students to
show that they can relate the information to temperatures
shown on a graph. The melting points of wax, lead and salt
have already been given as 64°C, 327°C and 801°C
and students should know the melting point of ice is 0°C.
You could ask them to show these values on a chart with only
the temperature scale and room temperature marked. If you
have an interactive whiteboard, then asking students to mark
these values on such a chart is a quick class activity. The

gives the answers.
