TGA5: Notes on substances and melting point
LINKS
‘A substance’

This summarises the unique link between a substance and its melting point. The fact that the sample size does not
affect melting point is covered in ‘Samples’, while the link between melting point and state at room temperature is
made in ‘State and melting point’.

‘State and melting point’

You may like to use this as an opportunity for students to show that they can relate the information to temperatures shown on a graph. The melting points of wax, lead and salt have already been given as 64°C, 327°C and 801°C and students should know the melting point of ice is 0°C. You could ask them to show these values on a chart with only the temperature scale and room temperature marked. If you have an interactive whiteboard, then asking students to mark these values on such a chart is a quick class activity. The next page of Stuff and Substance, ‘Melting point chart’, gives the answers.
