Students can go on to build on their understanding of substances by learning about the structure and formation of crystals, and the relationship of melting and boiling points to energy transfer.

Mixtures of substances
Students learn how the particle model can explain diffusion, factors affecting the rates of evaporation and dissolving, and chromatography.

Changing substances
This section develops the concept of a chemical reaction through the introduction of chemical symbols for molecular substances and giant structures. Students learn about fire as a particular example of a chemical reaction, and about acids and reactions involving acids.
