Notes
on the video of methane burning
Students should be able to suggest that
|
the
flame is a chemical reaction ( this
time between methane and the oxygen of the air); |
|
we know there is
methane left at the end because the bag has not collapsed.
|
After viewing the ignition of methane in real time, go back
and use the controls to watch the flame appear frame
by frame for both the splint and the hot wire.
By pausing the video at appropriate times, you should draw
attention to the following points:
|
the
flame starts high up (because this is where the methane
has mixed with the oxygen) |
|
the flame goes out
from the bottom upwards when a bell jar is placed over
the top |
condensation forms on the inside of the bell jar.
