Notes
on the ‘Think for Yourself’ questions
Why is wax in the solid state at room temperature, but oleic
acid in the liquid state?
Wax molecules have a stronger hold
on each other, enough to give a melting point above room temperature.
The difference is due to the different shapes of the molecules:
oleic acid molecules have a kink which means they do not hold
onto each other so well).
How would you try to get wax to react with oxygen?
Heat it up until it is boiling: it
should ignite like oleic acid did.
What will the new substances be?
Water and carbon dioxide.
Notes on the video of the candle wax
You may find it helpful to go back over the ignition frame
by frame.
