Notes on the ‘Think for Yourself’ questions
Why is wax in the solid state at room temperature, but oleic acid in the liquid state?
Wax molecules have a stronger hold on each other, enough to give a melting point above room temperature. The difference is due to the different shapes of the molecules: oleic acid molecules have a kink which means they do not hold onto each other so well).
How would you try to get wax to react with oxygen?
Heat it up until it is boiling: it should ignite like oleic acid did.
What will the new substances be?
Water and carbon dioxide.
