Notes
on the ‘Think for Yourself’ questions
Why does the candle in the jar of pure oxygen stay alight
for longer?
There is more oxygen to react with
the wax.
Why is there more condensation in the jar that started with
pure oxygen?
More wax reacts with more oxygen.
This will give more water.
Why is the candle flame brighter in the jar of pure oxygen?
The reaction is quicker: it gives
out energy faster.
Notes on the video of heating sugar
During the video, draw students’ attention to
|
the bubbles in the molten sugar:
ask what these might be |
|
the fact that a
flame can be lit: ask students what this suggests |
|
the black stuff
left in the tube at the end: what might it be? They
should realise that it is not sugar. |
(The answers to these questions are dealt with on the next
page of the Teachers’ Guide)
